FROM STUNNING MASSERIAS TO GOLDEN-HOUR OLIVE GROVES, HERE IS WHY COUPLES CHOOSE SOUTHERN ITALY FOR THEIR PUGLIA WEDDING DESTINATION.

Choosing Your Season: Peak vs. Shoulder Months

As a destination wedding photographer, I split my time between Melbourne, Australia, and Puglia, Italy. Consequently, couples ask me one question more than any other: “When is the best time to get married in Puglia to get the perfect weather without the crazy crowds?”

Most couples instantly imagine July and August when picturing a destination wedding in southern Italy. However, from a professional photographer’s perspective, your chosen date changes everything. The timing completely shifts your budget, your local logistics, and the final look of your wedding photography.

Puglia consists of charming, small historic towns, minus the larger hubs of Bari and Lecce. Therefore, the physical environment changes dramatically between the high summer rush and the quiet shoulder seasons.

If you are currently planning your day, here is my honest, practical breakdown to help you find the best time to get married in Puglia.

1. High Summer: Is June to August the Best Time to Get Married in Puglia?

If you want absolute energy, guaranteed hot weather, and a lively Italian atmosphere, peak summer is unmatched.

The Pros: Vibrant Atmosphere & Perfect Beach Days

Peak summer brings a beautiful, electric atmosphere that quieter months lack. During this time, everything operates at full capacity. Beach clubs, coastal wedding venues, and seasonal restaurants stay open late into the night. This season offers perfect beach weather. Because Puglia boasts some of Italy’s most amazing coastlines, hiring a vehicle gives you the freedom to explore them at your own pace.

The Cons: The Heat, Premium Costs & Long Holidays

  • Intense Heat: July and August bring blazing Mediterranean heat. The sun gets so intense that some local wedding venues actually close for a period in August so staff can take a holiday.
  • The High Travel Season: Italian school holidays run from mid-June to mid-September. With a full three months off, northern Italian families flood the region to travel down south to Puglia’s beaches.
  • Ferragosto Chaos: Mid-August revolves around Ferragosto (August 15th), a major national holiday. During this week, the entire country hits the coast. Crowds reach their absolute peak, prices skyrocket, and local logistics require extra planning.

🚗 Inside Tip: Logistics, Taxis, and Parking

While public transport exists in Puglia, it is somewhat limited. Buses and trains won’t always take you exactly where you want to go, especially when you travel to secluded wedding masserias.

Hiring a car is the best way to see the region. However, rates spike in peak summer and deals are harder to find, so definitely book well in advance. If you’re landing at Brindisi airport I personally found LeoRentalCars the most affordable.

Once you have your car, watch out for parking in old towns like Ostuni. While parking at dedicated countryside masserias or wedding venues is generally completely fine, finding a spot near the ancient, historic centres requires patience during peak season.

Keep in mind that rideshare apps like Uber aren’t widely available across the region yet. Because distances between towns are long, standard local taxis become expensive quickly. Organizing group shuttle transport for your wedding night is always a great move for your guests.

2. Spring Shoulder: Why April to May is a Beautiful Time

If you prefer a lush, romantic, and budget-friendly backdrop, the spring shoulder season is spectacular.

April: The Prettiest (and Boldest) Month

For me, the Puglian landscape looks its most beautiful in April. Unlike the dry earth of August, the countryside stays green and lush from February through to the spring. If you choose an April wedding, your backdrop will feature vibrant green grass growing between ancient olive trees. Bright red poppies and wild flowers bloom everywhere. Summer isn’t far away, and even though the temperatures are cooler, crisp, bright blue skies often treat the region.

  • The Photographer’s Take: April is a slight gamble. The weather is mostly great, but it can throw surprises at you. For example, this past April brought some pretty heavy winds. If you take a small risk with the weather, the visual payoff for your wedding portraits is unmatched.
  • The Budget Benefit: Venues and accommodations cost much less and are far more readily available than in the peak months.
  • Dates to Watch Out For: While April is generally peaceful, local travel spikes around major Italian holidays. Watch out for Pasqua (Easter Sunday), Pasquetta (Easter Monday), and April 25th (Festa della Liberazione / Liberation Day). Towns pack out over these long weekends, so try to avoid booking your main wedding events on these specific dates.

Late May: The Transition

By late May, the weather becomes warmer and more stable. However, tourist numbers also begin to pick up during this time. It serves as a beautiful middle ground if you want guaranteed warmth before the summer heat sets in.

3. Autumn Shoulder: Why October is the Best Time to Get Married in Puglia

If you prefer a golden, warm-toned aesthetic with fewer crowds, autumn is pure perfection.

September: The Summer Wind-Down

September still feels very much like summer, and the towns stay quite busy for most of the month. However, as the weeks progress, the school holidays end, numbers decline, the air cools down to a comfortable warmth, and the heavy peak-season rush begins to ease.

October: The Hidden Gem

Many photographers agree that the beginning of October is the absolute best time to get married in Puglia. The summer crowds depart completely, leaving the streets of towns like Ostuni quiet and authentic again. The weather holds onto a beautiful, mild warmth that sometimes leans into early November. This climate makes October ideal for outdoor dinners at a traditional masseria.

  • The Photographer’s Take: The autumn light in Puglia is spectacular. Because the region sits on a flat plateau with wide horizons, the late afternoon sun in September and October sits low. It creates a soft, clean, golden-hour light. This light turns the white limestone walls of the venues into a warm amber. As a photographer, it’s a dream for capturing clean, documentary wedding photography.
