If you’ve lived in Melbourne for more than five minutes, you already know the golden rule: you can easily experience four distinct seasons before lunchtime.

When couples start planning their wedding here, picking a date usually brings up a fair bit of anxiety around the weather. As a documentary photographer splitting my year between Victoria and southern Italy, I get asked about seasonal timing constantly.

While peak summer is the traditional choice, I don’t strictly advise sticking to December or January. Autumn and winter have become increasingly popular for good reason, they offer less venue competition, lower minimum spends, and incredible light.

If you’re trying to lock in a date, here is an honest, practical breakdown of what each season actually looks like behind the camera, along with a reality check on Melbourne weather.

The Big Myth: Why Overcast Days Are Actually Ideal

Before looking at specific months, it is worth clearing up the biggest misconception couples have when looking at the weather forecast: cloud cover is not a disaster.

In fact, ask almost any photographer, and they will tell you that a slightly overcast day is actually the easiest, most forgiving weather to shoot in.

  • Natural Diffusion: Clouds act as a massive natural diffuser. Essentially turning the entire sky into a giant softbox.
  • No Harsh Shadows: Direct, unshaded mid-summer sun casts harsh, heavy shadows under eyes and noses, forcing us to hunt for tree shade or turn you away from the sun so you aren’t squinting.
  • Total Location Freedom: On an overcast day, the light is soft, smooth, and flattering from every single direction. We can stand out in an open field at 2:00 PM without anyone squinting or sweating through their suit.

If it turns out to be cloudy on your wedding day, don’t stress for a second. Your skin tones will look incredible, and we have complete freedom over where we shoot.

Summer (December to March): Long Sunsets & Outdoor Warmth

Deciding to get married in peak summer gives you the most consistent warm weather and the longest daylight hours of the year.

  • The Vibe: Vibrant, warm, and late-night outdoor parties.
  • The Sunset Reality: In December and January, the sun doesn’t drop until around 8:30 PM or 8:45 PM. This completely changes how we run your reception timeline.
  • The Photographer’s Take: My favorite time to take couples out for portraits is during golden hour, and I always aim for at least 30 minutes. In peak summer, because the sun sets so late, we don’t have to rush portraits before dinner. You can do your ceremony, enjoy canapés, sit down, eat your main meal, and then we sneak out for 30 minutes right between courses as the light softens.
  • What to Watch For: Heatwaves. A 38°C day in February can be tough if your ceremony is in an unshaded field. If you’re planning a mid-summer date, make sure your venue has air-conditioned indoor spaces or shaded ceremony options for your guests.

Autumn (April to May): Crisp Air & Soft, Directional Light

I’ll be honest. I have a massive soft spot for autumn weddings in Victoria.

As the summer heat backs off, the air turns crisp, and the landscape across the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, and CBD parks completely shifts. The vine leaves turn deep red and gold, making it an incredible time for outdoor photography.

  • The Vibe: Relaxed, colorful, and comfortable.
  • The Sunset Reality: Sunset drops to a manageable 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM by late April, meaning your portraits happen naturally right after cocktail hour before everyone heads inside for dinner.
  • The Photographer’s Take: Because the sun sits lower in the sky all day during autumn, you bypass that harsh, stark midday glare altogether. The light stays soft and directional from early afternoon straight through to dusk. You aren’t battling heat, you aren’t squinting, and suit jackets actually stay on.

Winter (June to August): Cozy Parties & Budget Perks

Winter weddings used to be considered the off-season, but they have seen a massive surge in popularity over the last few years. Couples are realising that winter offers some huge practical and financial advantages.

  • The Vibe: Intimate, moody, and atmospheric.
  • The Budget & Booking Perk: Venues that are booked out 18 months in advance for summer Saturdays often have great availability in winter, usually with significantly lower minimum spends and discounted package rates.
  • The Photographer’s Take: Winter lighting is heavily underrated. The sun stays very low on the horizon all day, giving you a warm, angled light even at 1:00 PM. With sunset occurring around 5:00 PM, we do your portraits early, get you warm, and spend the rest of the night focusing on a cozy reception inside a CBD restaurant or vineyard barn, complete with open fires, great red wine, and direct flash on the dance floor.

Spring (September to November): Fresh Greenery & High Volatility

Spring brings lush, green landscapes and flowers in bloom, but it is also when Melbourne’s “four seasons in one day” reputation is at its absolute peak. You can easily get a 26°C sunny afternoon followed by a 12-degree drop and a rain squall two hours later.

  • The Vibe: Fresh, green, and vibrant.
  • The Sunset Reality: Sunset shifts from 6:15 PM in September to around 8:00 PM by late November as daylight saving kicks in.
  • The Photographer’s Take: Spring produces incredible, vivid green backdrops across regional Victoria. The key to enjoying a spring wedding is simply choosing a venue with an indoor backup space that you genuinely love, rather than viewing it as a compromise. If it rains, we grab a couple of clear umbrellas, embrace the wet cobblestones or dark wood interiors, and keep moving.

How Sunset Times Should Dictate Your Ceremony Start Time

When mapping out your day, work backward from the sunset time of your chosen month:

SeasonApprox. Sunset TimeRecommended Ceremony TimeRecommended Portrait Window
Summer (Dec–Feb)8:30 PM – 8:45 PM4:00 PM or 4:30 PM7:45 PM – 8:15 PM (Between courses)
Autumn (Mar–May)5:30 PM – 7:15 PM2:30 PM or 3:00 PM4:45 PM – 5:15 PM (During cocktail hour)
Winter (Jun–Aug)5:00 PM – 5:30 PM2:00 PM4:00 PM – 4:30 PM (Before dinner)
Spring (Sep–Nov)6:15 PM – 8:00 PM3:30 PM6:30 PM – 7:00 PM (Before/during dinner)

Summary: Which Season Fits Your Style?

  • If you want long daylight hours, late-night outdoor drinks, and an 8:30 PM golden hour, aim for December to March.
  • If you want crisp air, rich autumnal colors, and soft light all day, aim for April or May.
  • If you want to stretch your budget further, skip the venue booking race, and throw a cozy indoor party, look at June to August.
