The Reality of the Multi-Day Puglia Wedding
Back home in Australia, The UK or The US, traditional weddings follow a pretty heartbreaking pattern. You spend a year planning an eight-hour blur of tight timelines, formal handshakes, and rushed small talk. By midnight, you realise you barely caught more than a passing word with your closest friends or your grandparents.
Puglia forces you to do the exact opposite.
Because almost every premier masseria across the region requires an exclusive two-to-three-day booking, you aren’t just renting a venue for an evening. You’re moving into a private stone sanctuary with your entire inner circle.
From a photographer’s perspective, this structural shift changes everything about how your story gets documented.
The First Night
The absolute best thing you can do for your guests on day one is break the ice early. Once everyone checks into their suites, drops their bags, and shakes off the international travel fatigue, you want the energy to drop instantly into a slower Mediterranean pace.
Welcome them with an effortless aperitivo right as the intense midday sun starts to drop into that soft, golden Italian glow. Chilled white Verdeca wine, crisp Aperol Spritzes, and massive bowls of local taralli and green olives.
For dinner, keep it simple. If you are staying at iconic properties like Masseria Salamina or Masseria Moroseta, their courtyards are the ultimate backdrops for a relaxed welcome night. Fire up the traditional wood-fired ovens for an open-air pizza party under market lights, or set long imperial tables lit by hundreds of taper candles to serve local, handmade orecchiette pasta.
My camera is already active here, but I keep it completely quiet and documentary-focused. This night isn’t about posed portraits; it’s about capturing the raw, unscripted energy of people hugging, drinking, and laughing together after months of anticipation.
The Wedding Day
By the next morning, something massive changes in the atmosphere. In a standard one-day wedding, the morning is usually a frantic, stressful countdown against a hair and makeup clock. In a masseria, that nervous tension doesn’t exist. Everyone already drank wine together the night before, so the typical wedding-day anxiety completely evaporates.
You’ll see groomsmen taking a slow morning swim, bridesmaids sharing breakfast on a shaded stone terrace, and family members just lounging in the sun. This morning layout is an editorial dream. Because your guests are already entirely comfortable around me and my lens, I’m able to capture incredibly intimate, honest frames of the morning long before anyone puts on a tuxedo or a gown.
When it comes to the ceremony timeline, you have to respect the Italian sun. Punishing afternoon heat creates harsh, flat shadows that ruin photos and make guests miserable. We want to schedule your vows roughly two to three hours before sunset—usually around 6:00 PM in the peak summer months.
This sets us up perfectly for the portraits. While your guests head off to a sprawling outdoor aperitivo filled with fresh burrata stations and live music, I’ll steal you away into the ancient olive groves. Properties like Masseria Montenapoleone have these massive, sprawling grounds with trees that have stood for centuries. We only need thirty minutes during this golden hour window, where the low sun filters through the silver leaves, to get those clean, high-fashion editorial portraits before you dance under the stars until the early morning.
The Day After
Day three is about a beautiful, laid-back recovery. Guests drift down to the pool terraces in swimwear and sunglasses for fresh espresso, light pastries, and hair-of-the-dog cocktails to talk about the night before. I love documenting this final chapter—the relaxed pool sessions and casual interactions that round out the real mood of the weekend.
If you want to give your crowd an incredible change of scenery, break away from the estate in the afternoon. Take everyone down to the Adriatic coastline to explore the white alleyways of Cisternino or the Baroque streets of Martina Franca.
My absolute favorite spot for a finale dinner is Ristorante La Rotonda 2, sitting literally right on the water in Torre Canne. You can set up a massive table overlooking the blue sea, order a sea of fresh crudo, and drink chilled local rosé while the waves crash right next to you.
If you happen to be marrying in the shoulder seasons (like April, May, or October), the valley is intensely green and the air is much cooler. A great alternative is renting a fleet of classic bicycles for a relaxed group ride through the rural country lanes, wrapping up the afternoon with a private tasting of deep Primitivo wine at Produttori di Manduria.
Why It Matters
A single-day timeline can only capture a wedding. A three-day gallery preserves the actual experience of having every single person you love living under one roof. By the time the weekend ends, your photos don’t just show what your dress looked like, they store the memory of what the entire chapters between the moments felt like.
Planning a multi-day celebration in Puglia?
I am currently booking editorial wedding weekend commissions for the upcoming European season. Let’s design a timeline that allows you to slow down and actually take it all in.
Because I live and work locally on the ground in Puglia from April to September, you don’t have to worry about flying a photography crew out from the UK, US or Australia. There are zero international travel or accommodation logistics to coordinate. I’ve been traveling to and exploring this pocket of Italy for the last six years, so I know the landscape, the culture, and the venues intimately. I know how the intense southern sun moves across these structures—whether we are dealing with the wide, open white courtyards of a modern estate or the deep, textured shadows of a weathered, traditional masseria walls.
My style is entirely documentary. I’m not here to stage fake moments or make you pose all day; I’m here to capture the day exactly as it feels, bridging the gap so you can just enjoy the party.
Whether you are leaning toward a grand, historic courtyard feast or a quiet, intimate olive grove gathering, I’d love to hear what you are planning. Take a look through my Portfolio or drop me a line via my Contact Form and let’s chat about layouts and light!
