Once you decide to get married in Puglia, you run into your first big planning decision: where in the region do you actually host it?

While Puglia spans hundreds of kilometers from north to south, destination weddings tend to cluster in two primary hotspots: The Itria Valley and The Salento. Both offer incredible food, warm hospitality, and sun-drenched settings, but they differ significantly when it comes to guest logistics, luxury venue density, and travel distances.

I’m Tim Sonmez, a British wedding photographer living in Ostuni during the summer with my Italian wife, and spending the rest of the year in Melbourne, Australia. Because I live and shoot across both areas, I know how their subtle differences play out on a wedding day.

Here is a practical breakdown of how the Itria Valley and the Salento compare so you can pick the right sub-region for your wedding style.

1. Airport Links, Travel Distances, and Logistics

How your guests get from their flight to their room is a huge factor, especially when hosting larger groups.

  • Itria Valley (Compact & Simple): The Itria Valley sits right in the middle of Puglia’s two international airports, Bari (BRI) and Brindisi (BDS). Most masserias are within a 45-minute drive from either airport. Because the towns are clustered closely together, guests can easily drive between Ostuni, Fasano, and Martina Franca in 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Salento (Spread Out): The Salento occupies the far southern heel of Italy. While Brindisi Airport is reasonably close to Lecce (around 30–40 minutes), heading further south toward Otranto, Nardò, or Gallipoli pushes drive times to 1 to 2 hours from Brindisi, and up to 2.5 hours from Bari. The area is physically more spread out, meaning guests will do more driving to explore.

2. Ease of Organizing 80+ Guests

If you are bringing 80 to 120+ guests over for a multi-day celebration, guest management changes completely depending on the sub-region.

  • Itria Valley (Easiest for Big Groups): If you want a seamless experience for 80+ guests, the Itria Valley is king. It has the highest density of large-capacity masserias and luxury resorts capable of sleeping big groups on-site or hosting large outdoor banquets. Guest accommodation is plentiful, and arranging private group shuttles for welcome drinks or recovery pool parties is straightforward.
  • Salento (Best for Strategic Outings): Hosting 80+ guests in the Salento is entirely doable, but it requires more planning. Because properties are more spread out, your guests will likely be scattered across boutique hotels in towns like Lecce or coastal villas near Nardò. You will need to coordinate structured transport for main events so guests aren’t navigating long night drives across the peninsula.

3. Luxury Venues and Things to Do

  • Where is the Luxury Concentrated? The Itria Valley (specifically around Fasano and Savelletri) holds the highest concentration of high-end luxury venues, five-star boutique masserias, and beach clubs in Southern Italy. The Salento offers incredible luxury, but it leans toward private aristocratic palazzos, historic wine estates, and exclusive coastal retreats rather than mega-resorts.
  • Things to Do in the Itria Valley: High-end olive oil tastings, vineyard tours, exploring the whitewashed alleys of Ostuni, beach days along the Savelletri coast, and dining in traditional piazze. It feels curated and easy to navigate.
  • Things to Do in the Salento: Deep cultural exploration. Touring the grand Baroque architecture of Lecce, swimming in the turquoise waters of the Ionian sea (like the “Maldives of Salento”), visiting wild coastal watchtowers, exploring historic wine cellars, and experiencing local Pizzica music culture.

4. Top Base Towns for Guests to Stay

Giving your guests a solid base town makes their trip infinitely better.

  • Itria Valley Base Towns:
    • Ostuni (“The White City”): Perfect for central boutique accommodation, buzzing evening aperitivo spots, and easy access to countryside venues.
    • Fasano & Savelletri: The luxury epicenters, ideal for guests who want high-end seaside resort stays close to top masserias.
    • Locorotondo & Cisternino: Charming, quieter hilltop towns surrounded by trulli, great for villa rentals.
  • Salento Base Towns:
    • Lecce: The “Florence of the South.” An incredible urban base full of Baroque architecture, fantastic restaurants, and historic boutique hotels.
    • Nardò: A stunning, lesser-known historic town close to the Ionian coast with beautiful palazzos.
    • Gallipoli & Otranto: Iconic coastal towns perfect for guests who want sea views, historic castle walls, and beach club access.

Top 3 Venues in Each Region

Itria Valley Top Picks

  1. Masseria Moroseta (Ostuni): The benchmark for modern minimalist design in Puglia, framed by ancient olive trees.
  2. Borgo Egnazia (Savelletri): A grand, village-style luxury resort built entirely from traditional whitewashed stone.
  3. Masseria Salamina (Fasano): A striking 17th-century castle-like estate featuring high stone towers, authentic farm history, and grand courtyards.

Salento Top Picks

  1. Castello Monaci (Salice Salentino): A breathtaking 16th-century fortified castle surrounded by sweeping vineyards and olive groves.
  2. Masseria Potenti (Manduria): A beautifully restored, sun-bleached masseria known for its bohemian, rustic-chic aesthetic and organic gardens.
  3. Palazzo Daniele (Gagliano del Capo): A stripped-back 150-year-old aristocratic palazzo combining raw historic walls with hyper-minimalist modern art.

The Verdict: Which Sub-Region Fits Your Vision?

  • Choose the Itria Valley if: You want a tight, convenient setup for 80+ guests, short airport transfers, the highest density of luxury masserias, and classic whitewashed stone aesthetic.
  • Choose the Salento if: You want a slightly wilder, highly cinematic backdrop, grand historic castles, Baroque city vibes, and you don’t mind a bit more driving across a spread-out peninsula.

Planning Your Puglia Wedding?

I live on the ground in Ostuni, Puglia from April to September. If you host your wedding anywhere in the Itria Valley or the Salento, there are zero travel or accommodation fees to worry about.

My approach balances a casual documentary style with a quick window for slick, editorial portraits. I won’t hold you hostage for hours of stiff posing. We will grab some great portraits while the golden light hits the stone, and then you can get back to your guests and enjoy the party.
